Asthma means intermittent narrowing of the airways causing shortness of breath and wheezing.

during an asthma attack the muscles in the walls of the bronchi(airways) contracts causing narrowing,,the lining of the airways also become swollen and inflamed produce excess mucous that can block the smaller airways..
in a few case an allergic response play rule in some people during the childhood..
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY:
1/the major cause of asthma including a variable degree of airflow obstruction related to bronchospasm , edema and hypersecretion.
2/exposure to certain triggers ,including bronchospasm and airwy inflammation..
PHASES OF ASTHMA:
EARLY PHASE is characterise by constriction of the bronchial airways and bronchispasm and edema to produce excess mucous..this occurs due to release of inflammatory mediators like histamine and prostoglandine....etc.
LATE PHASE is characterise by inflammatory response..
SYMPTOMS:
1/wheezing.
2/painless tightening in the chest
3/ shortness of breath
4/ difficulty exhaling
5/ dry presistent cough
6/ sweating
DIAGNOSIS:
1/ lung function test
2/ measuring blood gases
TREATMENTS:
1/ BRONCHODILATORS:
albuterol.
2/ XANTHINE DRUGS:
theophylline
3/ANTI -INFLAMMATORY DRUGS:
CORTICOSTEROIDS
4/ ANTI ALLERGENS:
antihistamine
